Alice Parker - Inventor
Inventor of the Gas Furnace
BLACK EXCELLENCE: ALICE PARKER
Alice Parker reportedly graduated from an annex of Howard University, excelling in science and math. She is thought to have lived from 1885 (or 1895)-1920, but little is recorded about her personal life. Her invention was the springboard for modern residential furnace designs.
Her furnace concept used gas, rather than the traditional wood or coal. Gas and oil were upcoming energy sources at the time, that connected with her vision. Use of these fuels would make heating a home less labor intensive. Parker did not stop at just envisioning a new source of fuel. She addressed efficiency as well.
Her blueprint included a system of air ducts that would help distribute warm air into several rooms of the home rather than just one. Families would no longer have to huddle around one lone source of heat. There are no known pictures of her, so when you Google the name, neither that (light skin) woman nor the darker more Afrocentric depiction, is likely to be her. What we do know is that over 100 years ago, in 1919, this ingenious Black woman inventor received a patent for what has become the reason we are warm today!
That is Alice Parker. Thank you to Ernest Quim III for this reminder of historical Black excellence.
